St. George's-in-the-Pines shares in the celebration of marriage from couples from around the world

We are pleased to help you in the planning of your special day

Rev. George Belcher with a newly married couple

If you have a local pastor and congregation, encourage them to be part of your planning. They offer you a continuing pastoral support network, and can participate both in your planning and in preparation for marriage. We are always happy to receive a letter or email from your pastor telling us they know you and support you in your desire to celebrate your marriage in Banff.

The Marriage Service belongs to the bride and groom and to the Church. Our role is to see that your integrity is honoured in the way you are being married, and the Church's integrity is being honoured. Within those two guidelines, and working from the two marriage liturgies of the Church (traditional and contemporary), you are welcome to customize the service to make it your own. The clergy do not really "perform your marriage." In the Christian understanding the bride and groom are the true ministers of the marriage.

Our role is to guide you through the service and lead your friends in your support in prayer. You are married in the eyes of God through the commitment you make to be husband and wife for the rest of your lives, by owning that commitment publicly before the world, and by living it. The marriage service, reflects those inner spiritual realities.

Anglican priests in good standing may officiate or participate, at the invitation of the rector of St. George's in the Pines.

Retired Anglican priest or one from another province may also officiate or participate, as above. In this case, he or she will have to either (1) request from the Bishop of Calgary a one-time license to officiate at a marriage, or (2) share with the rector of St. George's in the ceremony.

Please visit our wedding planning page for more information.

At St. George's you do not have to be Anglican to get married at our church.  If either the bride or groom belong to another Christian denomination, St. George's would be pleased to help you celebrate your wedding in our beautiful church in Banff National Park.  In all cases, however, St. George's clergy will officiate at your wedding.

Your priest or pastor will be welcome to take a major role: for example leading the prayers, delivering a short homily, reading Scripture,  blessing the couple or assisting in communion, but his or her involvement will be under the direction of our clergy.  In addition to presiding at your wedding,  St. George's clergy will take responsibility for preparing and signing official documentation.  Our staff are sensitive to your traditions and all liturgical requests will be carefully considered and responded to.  In rare cases, especially with main-line denominations, guest clergy may granted permission to officiate at a wedding  in St. George's in the Pines Anglican Church by the Incumbent.
