The Marriage Canon of the

Anglican Church of Canada

Canon XXI of the Anglican Church of Canada "On Marriage In The Church", sets out a few basic requirements.

BAPTISM

Since the marriage service is a Christian act, at least one of you must be Christian. It has much more meaning and integrity if at least one of you is a practicing believer.

NOTICE OF INTENTION TO MARRY

At least 60 days' notice must be given to the Rector.

MARRIAGE LICENSE

You must abide by the laws of the Province of Alberta and obtain a Marriage License which is valid for three months. Please bring the marriage license with you to the rehearsal.

PREPARATION FOR MARRIAGE

We strongly urge you to arrange for some premarital preparation, even if you have been living together for some time. Many churches offer Preparation for Marriage weekends or courses, or you could make arrangements with your local pastor. Information about Calgary area courses may be obtained by phoning St. Peter's Church (403) 252-0393.

BLESSINGS OF A CIVIL MARRAIGE

Occasionally couples who have been married in a civil ceremony elsewhere ask to celebrate a Blessing of their marriage in St. George's. This is quite possible. It must be understood that this is not a re-marriage, but an affirmation and celebration, in the context of Christian worship, of a marriage which has already taken place. You do not need a license, but must show your marriage certificate beforehand.

MARRIAGE OF DIVORCED PERSONS

The Anglican Church of Canada allows for the marriage of divorced persons. However, the rector will want to spend some extra time with you, or refer you to your local clergy, to offer support as you prepare for this new marriage.

THE SERVICE

You may wish to celebrate your marriage either with or without the Eucharist (Holy Communion). You may choose from two service books, either the more traditional Book of Common Prayer or the more contemporary Book of Alternative Services.

We are quite happy to discuss with you ways in which you may make the service your own.
